The purpose of the brake pads is to slow down or stop your car by creating friction against the brake rotors. Over time, they wear out and need to be replaced because their whole purpose is to get used up in the process of deceleration. A helpful thing to know is when they need to be changed. Here are five signs pointing directly at bad or worn-out brake pads:
1. LONGER STOPPING DISTANCE
If your vehicle is taking longer to come to a complete stop or is experiencing difficulties slowing down, your brake pads are probably worn out. You may also feel the need to push the brake pedal down further than usual to achieve the same stopping power, which is also a bad sign.
2. SQUEAKING OR SQUEALING NOISE
Hearing any unfamiliar noises can be worrying, but don’t panic. It can be caused by the wear indicators that some manufacturers put in brake pads. When the brake pads wear out to a certain point, they start to make noises when contacted.
3. INSPECT THE BRAKE PADS
If you want to save a couple of bucks on a repair shop, you can inspect the brake pads on your own. While it is hard to determine if they are okay or not through a wheel, if you catch it in time, it can save you from trouble.
4. VIBRATION OR PULSATION IN THE BRAKE PEDAL
Feeling any vibrations while braking should catch your attention right away. Most of the time, it is caused by unevenly worn brake pads or bent rotors. We advise you to visit a repair shop for a proper inspection and evaluation.
5. WARNING LIGHT ON THE DASHBOARD
A lot of vehicles, especially modern ones, are equipped with a light that comes on only if the brake pads need replacing or servicing. Usually, it resembles a hollow circle with lines on two sides, in yellow or orange. Make sure to take advantage of this obvious sign and visit a repair shop when possible.
